Canes blank Villa Rica, advance to Sweet Sixteen
Marvel Velasquez and Joel Zazueta scored two goals each as the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes defeated visiting Villa Rica Wednesday night at Weinman Stadium in the opening round of the GHSA Class AAAAA state soccer playoffs.
Velasquez scored off a corner kick in the 20th minute followed by a penalty kick goal by Zazueta in the 25th minute. In the final seconds of the first half, Velasquez gave Cartersville a 3-0 halftime lead when he back-heeled a ball over the line.
Zazueta rounded out the scoring in the 77th minute for the Canes’ 4-0 win advancing them to the second round where they will either host Loganville or travel to St. Pius next Tuesday.
Cartersville improved to 9-5-1. Villa Rica’s season ends with an 8-11 mark.
