Canes blanked at Carrollton
Cartersville baseball was shutout at unbeaten Carrollton Thursday evening, 6-0, in non-region action. The Class 5A 7th-ranked Trojans scored three runs in the home half of the first inning and added a fourth run in the second inning. Carrollton tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth for the 6-0 final score.
Both teams utilized a trio of pitchers.
Eli Runyan (2.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 5K) was the starter and winning pitcher for Carrolton. Sam Simpson (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 5K), and Colton Cosper (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 5K) also took the mound for the Trojans. Micah Earwood (2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 3H, 4K) was the Cartersville starter and was tagged with the pitching loss. Hayden Davidson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) and Mason McBee (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 0H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for the Canes.
Parker Willis had two hits for Carrollton. Simpson contributed a triple and two RBI. Chael Sullivan had one hit and one RBI. Chaz Hickman added a base hit and Nick Tuggle drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Parker McPherson had two hits including a double for Cartersville. Davis Williams doubled and stole a base. Elliott Eastin and Sam Melton had the other Hurricanes’ hits.
The Trojans improved to 13-0 with Thursday’s win. Cartersville (7-6) was scheduled to host LaGrange Monday in both teams’ Region 5-AAAA opener. Shortly after Thursday night's game, the Cartersville Baseball Twitter feed revealed the following message: The Canes’ 2020 season is suspended through March 29 for all three teams. The health and safety of our players, coaches, families, and friends is of the utmost importance. We certainly hope to return to the field this spring if it’s deemed safe for all.
