Canes blank Calhoun to earn region's No. 2-seed
The Cartersville boys climbed the region seeding ladder Friday night with an impressive 3-0 win over visiting Calhoun,
The Canes controlled play throughout and moved up to the region’s No. 2-seed by virtue of a region tie-breaker rules. Cartersville, Calhoun, and Cass all finished 3-2 in region action. The tie-breaker leaves Calhoun as a 3-seed and Cass as the region’s No. 4-seed. The three teams in the tie were all 1-1 against one another, but Cartersville allowed the fewest goals in those games.
Melvin Velasquez and Dawson Gulasa both scored first half goals off assists from Daniel Abeja to earn the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Marvel Velasquez scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute for the Canes’ third goal.
Cartersville (8-7-1, 3-2) will conclude regular season play Friday at Allatoona with a non-region game at 7:30 p.m. and will host the Region 5-5A No. 3-seed the following week in the Class 5A state playoffs.
CALHOUN 2, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 1
The Lady Canes slipped to the third-seed from Region 7-5A Friday night after suffering a 2-1 loss to Calhoun Friday night at Weinman Stadium.
Calhoun scored a pair of first half goals — one on a penalty kick in the early minutes — to put the Lady Canes in an early hole.
Hattie Williams scored off an assist from Abbey Craig for Cartersville’s goal. It narrowed the margin to 2-1 but the Lady Canes got no closer.
Cartersville (5-9-1, 3-2) qualifies for the state playoffs as a 3-seed with Calhoun (7-5-1, 4-1) earning the region’s No. 2-seed. Cartersville has a non-region match Friday at Allatoona to wrap of regular season play.
The Lady Canes will travel to 4th-ranked St. Pius X in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Calhoun will host 8th-ranked Decatur.
