Canes blast Hornets for 20th straight win, establish new program win total for the regular season


The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes swept a doubleheader with Hiram Monday evening at the Cartersville Baseball Complex to set a new school record with 26 regular season wins.


The Canes can extend that record Tuesday at Hiram in their final regular season game.


Monday night, Cartersville blanked Hiram 16-0 in the opening game in three innings and won the second game 15-0 in four innings.

Canes’ pitchers limited the visiting Hornets to only one hit in the doubleheader. The lone Hiram hit came in the second inning of Game 1 off Phillip Schiltz who struck out the other nine batters he faced.

In Game 2, Canes’ pitchers Geoffrey Gore, Dawson Bishop, and Jackson Harwell combined on a four-inning no-hitter, and the trio struck out seven of the thirteen batters faced.


Canes’ hitters smacked five homers in the doubleheader. Miles Owen, Gavin Shrewsbury, Harrison Childers, Caleb Daniel, and Maddox Frazier hit one each.


Owen finished the night with three hits and five RBIs. Childers had three hits and three RBIs. Frazier added a double and totaled three RBIs. Shrewsbury had three RBIs and Daniel completed the twin bill with four RBIs.


Kaden Stephenson (double, two RBIs), Hunter Kelly (double, two RBIs), Trip Bradley (three RBIs), Paul Gamble (two RBIs), and Isaac McNair-Seigler (double, RBI) all finished the doubleheader with two hits.


Landon Cole (RBI), Cameron Cochran, Turner Abernathy, Nate Russell, and Luke Miller added one hit apiece.


With the doubleheader sweep, Cartersville (26-2, 14-0 Region 7-5A) extended its current win streak to 20 games. The Canes wrap up regular season play Tuesday at Hiram (4-20, 0-14).
