Canes, Colonels add baseball wins on Tuesday

The Purple Hurricanes picked up a road win Tuesday in Douglasville over the Alexander Cougars while the Cass Colonels moved over the .500 mark with a shutout victory at the Pickens High School Mountain Classic.


In one other game involving a local team at the Mountain Classic, the Woodland Wildcats fell to North Atlanta 13-3.



CARTERSVILLE 17, ALEXANDER 7


Cameron Cochran

Cameron Cochran drove in six runs Tuesday as the 2nd-ranked Hurricanes built a big early lead and cruised to a 17-7 win at Alexander in five innings.


Cartersville led 15-0 in the middle of the third inning.


Cochran singled home a pair of runs in the Canes’ seven-run first inning and hit a grand slam to left field in the third inning to post his six RBIs.


Caleb Daniel (solo HR) and Landon Cole (double, three RBIs) also had two hits. Luke Miller (RBI), Thomas Peters (RBI), Charlie Rothschild, and Cole Crawford (RBI) had one hit each. Andrew Purdy added one RBI for the Purple Hurricanes.


Jackson Harwell (2.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) was credited with the pitching win for the Canes. Maddox Frazier (1.1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) and Nolan Elrod (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) pitched in relief.


The Cougars fell to 0-5 on the season with their loss.


Cartersville (4-0) hosts Etowah on Thursday at 1 p.m. and Ringgold on Saturday at noon.




CASS 8, ST. FRANCIS 0


Chase Tatum

The Colonels scored in four of six offensive frames Tuesday afternoon while Trenton Payne and Chase Tatum combined on the mound for a shutout as Cass blanked St. Francis, 8-0, at the Pickens Mountain Classic.


Payne struck out seven and scattered four hits with no walks in the first five innings to collect the pitching win. Tatum closed out the final two innings allowing no runs or hits. He walked one and fanned four.


Connor Jenkins (double, two RBIs) and Tatum (RBI) led the Colonels’ offense with two hits each. Hunter Lovett (sac fly, three RBIs), Caleb Freeman, and Justin Peace had one hit. Payne drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.


The Knights slipped to 2-2 on the season with their loss.


Cass (3-2) plays Hebron Christian on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Mountain Classic in Jasper.




NORTH ATLANTA 13, WOODLAND 3


Cam Williams

North Atlanta grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third inning Tuesday and piled on the runs late in a 13-3 six-inning win over Woodland at the Pickens Mountain Classic in Jasper.


Woodland matched the Warriors with 10 hits in the contest but failed to match the run production.


Four pitchers worked on the mound for Woodland in the loss. Ayden Ray (3 IP, 3ER, 2H, 2BB, 6K) started and was tagged with the loss. JD Trail (1 IP, 5ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K), Lucas Baker (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB), and Connor Stermer (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Wildcats.


Logan Bentley and Cam Williams (RBI) had two hits each to lead the Woodland offense. Stermer, Baker, Ray (double, RBI), Conner Lujan (double), Joshua Hicks, and Jake Clowers added one hit each.


Woodland (2-2) returns to action Wednesday at the Mountain Classic against Christian Heritage in a 5:30 p.m. first pitch and will face Franklin County on Thursday at 3 p.m.
