Canes eliminate Woodland; Cass teams and Woodland girls also fall in first round

The Woodland and Cass basketball teams were eliminated from the Region 7-AAAAA basketball tournament Monday evening in first-round games played at the Cartersville High Storm Center.
The Cartersville boys defeated Woodland 62-49 and the Woodland girls lost to Calhoun, 47-25. The Cass girls were eliminated by Hiram, 50-40, and the Calhoun boys topped the Cass boys, 75-67.
CALHOUN 47, WOODLAND GIRLS 25
The Lady Cats led 8-6 after one quarter Monday evening but Calhoun took control in the second quarter on the Jackets’ way to a 47-25 win in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament at Cartersville High School.
Calhoun outscored Woodland 17-4 in the second quarter to lead 23-12 at halftime. The Jackets extended that lead to 37-16 by the end of the third period.
Saniah Dorsey scored a game-high 17 points to lead Calhoun. Kat Atha, Jaylan Moore, and Allie Duke finished with 10 points each.
Gracie Shipp led Woodland with 12 points. Megan Schultz chipped in with five. Reagan Weightman and Libby Morgan added four each for the Lady Cats.
Calhoun (17-9) advances to play Cartersville on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Woodland’s season ends with a 7-16 record.
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 62, WOODLAND 49
The 3rd-seeded Hurricanes raced out of the gates Monday to a 19-5 lead in the first eight minutes and maintained their advantage the rest of the way in a 62-49 first-round win.
Woodland got within single digits on multiple occasions, but couldn’t quite overcome the early Cartersville lead.
The Canes led 37-19 at halftime and 46-34 through three quarters.
Kaden Baldwin led Cartersville with 14 points. Ced McClinic scored 13. Reed Ezell tossed in 10 and Jamauri Brice contributed eight points for the Canes.
Cartersville (12-13) advances to face No. 2-seed Dalton at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The win also secured a state tournament berth.
Woodland’s season ends with a 7-18 mark.
HIRAM 50, CASS GIRLS 40
The Lady Colonels made a few runs at Hiram in the second half but could never get over the hump in a 50-40 loss in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament Monday night at Cartersville’s Storm Center.
Hiram led at each quarter stop: 15-9 after one period, 29-18 at halftime, and 38-31 at the end of the third quarter.
Taylor Crawford and Hadiya Kennerly led the Lady Hornets with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Zion Hayes paced Cass with 14 points and added 11 rebounds. Kiana McDaniel finished with eight points. Neveah Woods and Olivia Woods contributed seven points each for the Lady Colonels.
Hiram (12-13) advances to play top-seeded Dalton in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday night.
The season ends for the Cass girls with a 15-11 record.
CALHOUN 75, CASS BOYS 67
In a game of scoring streaks Monday night, Calhoun finished strong in the fourth quarter to eliminate Cass at the Region 7-5A Tournament at Cartersville High School, 75-67.
Cass led 21-15 after one quarter and was up 41-33 at the intermission. Calhoun made up the eight-point deficit in the third quarter to knot the score at 51-all.
Landon Chattam led Calhoun with 21 points. Daniel Steele followed with 17 and Emaree Winston finished with 16 points for the Yellow Jackets.
Kyron McClendon scored 23 points for Cass. Camari Nettles contributed 18 and Kevin Henderson added 12 for the Colonels.
Calhoun (9-15) advances to Wednesday night’s semifinal round to face top-seeded Hiram.
The Colonels’ season ends with a 7-15 record.
