Canes finish year as 2022 Class 5A State Runner-Up
The Loganville Red Devils won their sixth state championship since 2008 and have now won four of the last five Class 5A state titles after defeating Cartersville 9-0 Tuesday night at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome.
Tuesday’s winner-take-all state championship game was forced last Saturday when the Hurricanes defeated Loganville 1-0 after losing the first game in the best-of-three series 5-4.
Loganville pitchers Matthew Heard (6 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB, 5K) and Trenton Burnett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) combined on a one-hitter to shutout the Canes for only the third time this season.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ offense scored twice in the second inning and four times in the third before adding on a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh.
Loganville finished the night with nine hits.
Jackson Chizek had three hits and Sherman Johnson followed with two including one triple.
Gage Fullerton, who was one of four Red Devils with one hit each, accounted for four Loganville RBIs.
The Hurricanes utilized a quartet of pitchers including Colt McKibben (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB), Phillip Schiltz (5 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K), Geoffrey Gore (0.2 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB), and Collin Eaton (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K).
Hank Smith had the Canes’ only base hit. It was a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Loganville wins the state championship and finishes the year 32-9.
Cartersville finishes 2022 with a Region 7-5A title and is state runner-up in Class 5A.
The Canes finished the year with a 32-8 mark.
