Canes in second, Lady Canes eighth following opening rounds at GHSA State Championships


The Cartersville High boys’ golf team trails by one shot and the Lady Canes are currently in eighth place following the opening rounds of their respective GHSA Class 5A State Championships.


The boys’ state tournament is being hosted by Cartersville Country Club while the girls’ state tournament is at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun.


Brody Tidwell fired an opening round 71 (1-under-par) Monday to lead the Hurricanes. He was followed by Andrew Lutjens with a 72. Anderson McCary carded a 78 and Reid Lowry followed with an 83. Noah Pogue shot 84 and Owen Dunn added an 89 for the Cartersville boys.


The Canes team total of 304 trails first-round leader, Cambridge (303), by a single shot. Northgate is in third place at 307.


In Calhoun, Brooklyn Heath shot 86 to pace the Lady Canes. She was followed by teammates Sophie Kim (92), Lily Cagle (110), and Maddy Morris (118).


The Cartersville girls’ total of 288 has them in eighth place at the midway point of the championship.


Greenbrier (251) leads the girls’ tournament by one shot ahead of Northview (252).


Both 36-hole championship tournaments conclude with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday.
