Canes, Lady Colonels punch state tourney tickets
The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Cass Lady Colonels both won Region 7-AAAAA opening round tournament games Monday night in Calhoun securing berths in the 2022 Class 5A state playoffs that will begin next week.
There’s still region business ahead for the two teams, however, as they will play Wednesday in the region tournament semifinals and again Friday in either third place consolation games or region title games.
In other action Monday, both Woodland teams lost their opening round contests in the same tournament at Calhoun High School and the Adairsville girls were knocked out of the Region 6-AAA tournament in LaFayette by Coahulla Creek.
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 56, CASS 52
The Cartersville boys secured a berth in the Class AAAAA state tournament Monday night by outlasting Cass in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament in Calhoun, 56-52.
After trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, Cartersville grabbed and 26-25 lead by halftime and extended their advantage to 43-39 by the end of the third quarter. With lead exchanges again in the final period, the Canes held off the Colonels down the stretch for a four-point victory.
Kam Callahan scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cartersville. Romo Pace finished with ninen points. Jaeden Scott and Luke Gambill tossed in eight each. Monty Tolbert contributed seven and Jamauri Brice added four points for the Hurricanes.
Jelani Hames led Cass with 13 points. Sacovie White and Ethan McIntyre followed with 10 apiece. Kaden Baldwin chipped in seven points. Jayden Foster finished with five. Devin Henderson added four points and Jackson Hale three for the Colonels.
The Cass boys have their season end with a 9-16 record.
Cartersville (11-12) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. to play top-seeded Hiram at Calhoun High School.
CASS GIRLS 57, CARTERSVILLE 33
The Cass girls punched their ticket for the state playoffs Monday night by defeating rival Cartersville in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament, 57-33.
Cass led 17-8 after one quarter and never trailed. The Lady Colonels took a 35-12 lead at halftime and were up 47-19 through three quarters.
A double-double by Claire Davis with 13 points and 12 rebounds paced the Lady Colonels. Freshman Miya Winston also reached double figures with 10 points for Cass. Mikaela Jackson and Zion Hayes followed with six points each. Amaya Ford, Haley Johnson, and Kiana McDaniel each scored five. Justice Bennett and Keara McDaniel added four and three, respectively.
Jakayah Draughn led Cartersville with 12 points. Zoe Casey scored six. Taff Bradley finished with five points. Ansley Griffin scored four. Aujyhnae Davenport chipped in with three points and Milena Bihm added two for the Lady Canes.
The Cartersville girls’ season comes to a close with a 4-14 record.
Cass (22-4) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. where they will play Blessed Trinity at Calhoun High School.
HIRAM 63, WOODLAND GIRLS 29
The Hiram girls led 31-14 at halftime and cruised to a 63-29 win over Woodland Monday evening at Calhoun High School in the first round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament.
Kalisha Phillips scored 20 points and Taylor Crawford added 14 for the Lady Hornets (14-9) who advance to play Calhoun in the region semifinals Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Abigail Taylor led Woodland with 11 points. Morgan Echols scored eight. Kasidee Wall contributed seven points and Reagan Weightman added three for the Lady Cats.
“I am proud of everything our two seniors (Abigail Taylor and Dylynn Motes) did both on the court and from leadership perspective this season with so many younger teammates,” said Woodland head coach Kyle Morgan. “I’m hoping our younger kids choose to invest in their games and have bright futures with continued hard work.”
The season ends for the Woodland girls with a 2-23 mark.
COAHULLA CREEK 63, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 57
The Adairsville girls led Monday night heading into the fourth quarter, but a 22-15 advantage by the Lady Colts in the fourth quarter lifted Coahulla Creek to a 63-57 Region 6-AAA tournament win at LaFayette High School.
The Lady Tigers were ahead 36-27 at the intermission but Coahulla Creek narrowed the lead to just one point at 42-41 by the end of the third quarter.
Brinkley Reed scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Colts. Marlee Fossett added eight.
Alissa Winters led Adairsville with 20 points. Ya’Torrean Hale followed with 14. Autumn Henderson scored 10. Haley Stiles and Lexie Childers contributed four each. Naxirya Roberts finished with three and Darby Adams added two points for the Lady Tigers.
Coahulla Creek (11-15) advances to play Sonoraville Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back at LaFayette.
Adairsville has its season end with a 12-14 record.
BLESSED TRINITY 89, WOODLAND BOYS 52
Blessed Trinity used a balanced scoring attack placing five players in double figures Monday night at Calhoun High School to defeat Woodland 89-52 in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament.
Woodland led 11-9 after the opening eight minutes, but the third-seeded Titans outscored the Wildcats 27-9 in the second quarter to take a 36-20 lead at the intermission.
Blessed Trinity (14-12) extended the lead to 60-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Brigham Rogers led Blessed Trinity with 19 points. Jackson Lewis followed with 13. Jack Whalen and Ty Harpring finished with 12 points each and Cole Weaver added 10 for the Titans.
KJ Rogers scored 21 points for the Wildcats. Harlin Morris finished with 10. Brelace Williams contributed six points. Jonah Plott scored four. David Jinks and Kyler Williams added three points apiece for Woodland.
Blessed Trinity advances to play Calhoun Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the region semifinals.
The Wildcats have their season end with a 5-19 mark.
