Canes nip Colonels on Novak's jumper; Lady Colonels improve to 19-0
The Cartersville boys toppled Cass Friday night on a last second shot to win a thriller at the Storm Center. Earlier in the evening, the Cass girls kept their perfect season going with a dominating win over the Lady Canes.
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 54, CASS 53
Cartersville’s Robert Novak hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining Friday night to lift Cartersville to a 54-53 Region 7-AAAAA win over visiting Cass at The Storm Center.
The Canes led 16-11 after one quarter and 33-20 at the intermission before the Colonels rallied behind C.J. Pipkin’s 13-point third quarter to narrow the score to 41-37.
Cass took a brief lead on a Pipkin jumper with 21 seconds left but the Novak trey sealed the win for the Canes at the end.
Novak finished with 20 points and Kolbe Benham added 19 for the Hurricanes. Amarai Orr chipped in with nine points for Cartersville.
Pipkin finished with 27 points to lead Cass. Andrew Glaze contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Colonels. Braxton Benham finished with eight points and Zaylan Chaney tossed in seven.
Cartersville improves to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in region play. The Canes step out of the region Saturday when they travel to Model for a 4:30 p.m. start.
Cass (15-6, 5-2) travels to region-foe Hiram Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
CASS GIRLS 63, CARTERSVILLE 28
Londaisha Smith led the Lady Colonels with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and eight steals Friday night as the Cass girls completed a regular season sweep of Cartersville 63-28.
Cass led 15-8 after the opening eight minutes and built a 31-11 lead by halftime. The Lady Colonels were up 55-21 through three quarters on their way to the 35-point win. Mikaela Jackson and Makyera Baldwin scored seven points each for Cass. Claire Davis finished with six points, five rebounds, and three assists. Justice Bennett contributed five points and seven rebounds.
Lehla Thomas and Jamiya Moore scored five points each for Cartersville. Thomas added seven rebounds. Kiera Milline, Sequoya McConnell, and Zoe Casey added four points each for the Lady Canes. McConnell also grabbed seven rebounds.
Cass (19-0, 6-0 in Region 7-AAAAA) plays at Hiram Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a battle of the top two team in the region.
Cartersville (4-11, 0-6) hosts Woodland next Friday at 7 p.m.
