Canes' playoff run ends with loss at Greenbrier


Harrison Childers had two hits Monday in the Canes' Game 3 loss at Greenbrier.

The hosting Greenbrier Wolfpack took a 3-0 lead in the second inning Monday evening and held off the Purple Hurricanes for a 5-3 win that clinched the Class 5A best-of-three state quarterfinal series, two games to one.



The two teams split their opening doubleheader in Evans on Saturday. Cartersville won the first game 4-3 and Greenbrier won the second game 6-4.


The Canes scored a single run in the third inning and two more in the fourth Monday to narrow their deficit to 4-3, but got no closer. Greenbrier tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning.


Pitchers Griffin Stewart (3.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) and Logan Brogdon (3.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 0BB, 6K) combined on the mound for the Wolfpack limiting the Hurricanes to three runs on eight hits. The two hurlers combined for eight strikeouts.


Phillip Schiltz (4 IP, 4R, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Cartersville and was tagged with the loss. Ryan Johnson (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 2K) retired the final nine outs in relief.


Jamie Daly (solo HR, triple) and Brogdon had three hits each for the Wolfpack. Kyle Puffer (double, two RBIs), Bryson Bell, and Hunter Knutson (double, RBI) added one hit each.


Harrison Childers led the Canes with a pair of hits. Landon Cole (double, two RBIs), Luke Miller (RBI), Miles Owen, Caleb Daniel, Isaac McNair-Seigler, and Paul Gamble added one hit apiece.


Greenbrier advances to the Class 5A state semifinals and will play at the Loganville/Locust Grove winner beginning this Saturday.


Cartersville finishes the year with a 32-4 record and a Region 7-5A championship.
