Canes win season opener over Etowah


Cartersville starting pitcher Micah Earwood delivers a pitch Thursday evening vs. Etowah

The Cartersville High baseball team got off to a strong start Thursday night with a 12-4 win over Etowah at LakePoint in Emerson.

The Hurricanes had eight players to record at least one hit each and seven batters drove in runs.

Cartersville led 6-1 through three innings and tacked on five more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-1 lead. The Canes extended their lead to 12-1 in the top of the fifth before the Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the frame.

Starting pitcher Micah Earwood (3.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 4BB, 4K) earned the win on the mound. Silas Freeman (1.2 IP, 3R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 4K) and Davis Williams (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3K) also pitched for Cartersville.

Parker McPherson led the offense with a pair of doubles, a walk, and one RBI. Josh Davis also had two hits including a triple and one RBI. Chandler Tromza and Drew Rothschild both tripled and finished with three and two RBIs, respectively. Alan Thacker (2 RBI), Ben Williams (RBI), Jack Carter (RBI), and Hank Smith had the other Cartersville base hits.

Carson Kirby hit a three-run home run for Etowah (0-2) in the fifth inning. The Eagles’ second inning run came on a bases loaded walk. Cartersville (1-0) will host Forsyth Central (1 p.m.) and Rockmart (4 p.m.) Saturday at Richard Bell Field.
