Cartersville boys advance with PK victory over Cross Keys
The Cartersville boys soccer team advanced in the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs with a home win Wednesday night over Cross Keys.
The two teams matched single goals in each half to force overtime tied at two goals each.
Marvel and Melvin Velasquez scored the Cartersville goals in regulation on penalty kicks.
Following a scoreless overtime session, the Canes won 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Marvel and Melvin Velasquez came through again in the penalty kick tiebreaker session scoring on the Canes' first two attempts. Alex Rios gave Cartersville a 3-2 lead in the PK session and Brian Juarez found the net on the game-winner after Canes' keeper Collier Parker made a pair of key saves on Cross Keys' kicks in the shootout.
The Cartersville boys (9-8-1) advance to the second round next Tuesday at Region 1-5A champion Veterans. Veterans defeated Drew 2-0 Wednesday night in the Warhawks first round match.
ST. PIUS 10, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 0
The 5th-ranked St. Pius girls soccer team defeated Cartersville 10-0 Wednesday night in Atlanta in both teams’ first round game of the Class 5A state playoffs.
The Lady Canes season comes to a close with a 5-11-1 record.
CHAMBLEE 10, WOODLAND GIRLS 0
The Woodland girls soccer team was bumped from the Class 5A state playoffs Wednesday night with a 10-0 loss to 3rd-ranked Chamblee.
The Lady Cats’ season ends with a 6-10-2 mark.
ST. PIUS 7, CASS BOYS 0
The Cass boys soccer team had their 2022 season end Wednesday night with a Class 5A state playoffs first round loss at 6th-ranked St. Pius, 7-0.
The Colonels finished the year with a 10-7-1 record.
