Cartersville defeats Woodland; Adairsville, Cass get region wins

Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville defeated visiting Woodland Thursday night while Adairsville topped Ridgeland and Cass won at Dalton.

The Canes and Wildcats battled scoreless through three innings before Cartersville broke the ice with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.


Cartersville added on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to finish off a 5-1 win Thursday night over visiting Woodland.


Ryan Johnson (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 6H, 0BB, 7K) struck out seven and allowed just one, unearned run in a complete-game effort.


Austin Daves (6 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) pitched well for the Wildcats but suffered the loss.


Ayden Ray had three hits for Woodland and drove in the Wildcats’ lone run in the sixth. Mason Williams, Cam Williams, and Brett Good had the other Woodland base hits.


Miles Owen finished with two hits for Cartersville. Cameron Cochran (RBI), Luke Miller, and Landon Cole had one double each. Caleb Daniel (RBI), Harrison Childers, Isaac McNair-Seigler (RBI), and Paul Gamble (RBI) added one hit each.


Cartersville (13-2, 5-0) visits Woodland (8-9, 3-2) Friday at 5:55 p.m. to complete the three game Region 7-5A series.


ADAIRSVILLE 7, RIDGELAND 4

The Tigers finished a two-game Region 6-AAA sweep of visiting Ridgeland Thursday night with a 7-4 win over the Panthers.


Adairsville posted four runs in the bottom of the first to take control early. Ridgeland scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to shrink the Tigers’ lead to 5-2, but Adairsville answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2. The Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh and had a runner on base when Adairsville reliever Jarrett Scott ended the threat with a strikeout.


Tigers’ starter Jack Nelson (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 8K) scattered four hits and a pair of walks while picking up the pitching win. He limited Ridgeland to only two unearned runs. Scott (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) finished off the seventh inning on the mound for the Tigers.


Scott also paced the Adairsville offense with three hits including a double. Landon O’Neal followed with two hits and one RBI. Evan Sanders hit a solo home run. Nelson doubled with one RBI. Tyler Driggers contributed a double. Braxton Ryan added a hit and one RBI. Peyton Bowen and Hayden Blalock also drove in a run.


The loss dropped Ridgeland to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA.


Adairsville (8-6, 2-0) travels to region-foe Gordon Lee Friday for a 5:55 p.m. start.


CASS 6, DALTON 2 (9 innings)


Jesiel Moctezuma had two hits including a double and two RBIs Thursday in the Colonels' nine-inning win at Dalton.

Tuesday night at Cass, the Catamounts scored seven runs across the final two innings for a come-from-behind win.


Thursday night the Colonels flipped the tables at Dalton.


Connor Jenkins homered in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings and the Colonels scored four times with two outs in the top of the ninth to even the series at one game each.


A Dalton error followed by back-to-back hits by Nic Wright and Wesley Collins gave Cass a 4-2 lead. Then another Cats’ error and a double by Jesiel Moctezuma drove in two more runs.


Trenton Payne gave up a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth before striking out the final two Catamounts.


Devan Hutchinson (3.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB) collected the pitching win in relief of starter Cayden Roberts (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 2K).


Moctezuma (two RBIs) and Wright (RB) both finished with two hits including a double for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts and Chase Tatum (RBI) also doubled. Jenkins (homer) and Collins (RBI) had the other Cass hits.


Dalton (3-11, 1-4) travels to Cass (9-6, 4-1) to complete their three-game region series Friday at 5:55 p.m.
