Cartersville defense, big plays fuel 48-0 shutout at Woodstock

Six of eight first-half possessions needed only 15 plays to produce 41 points for Cartersville on Sept. 4 at Woodstock as CHS downed the Wolverines 48-0.

The Canes’ defense held Woodstock to 84 total yards while grabbing three first-half turnovers.

With his team up 14-0, Cooper Melvin recovered a fumble to end Woodstock's third drive, and then his 47-yard interception return on their next possession put the ball deep into Wolverine territory. Athens Davenport punctuated the scoring with a 35-yard pick-six near the end of the half that drove the lead to 48-0.

CHS rolled up a season-high 450 yards of total offense, 294 of them through the air.

Brayden Doss connected on 10-of-12 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Madoxx Davis accounted for 163 of those yards and two scores on only four catches. CJ McClendon carried the ball 10 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

After forcing a Woodstock punt to open the game, CHS needed only two plays on each of its first two possessions before Davis stood in the end zone after a Doss pass.

The first started with a quick screen, Davis waterbugging around defenders before breaking free for the 60-yard score. The second went for 64 yards, as Davis hit the afterburners to get five yards of separation from the defensive back before Doss connected in stride down the middle of the field.

One play after Melvin's interception set up the offense at Woodstock's 18, Tyon Coe sprinted untouched through a pasture plowed courtesy of the Canes offensive line for a 21-0 lead. CJ McClendon followed with a 12-yard rushing score of his own before Cole Crawford's touchdown catch covering 20 yards.

Doss capped his night on the next drive with a 24-yard run around left end down the sideline for the 41-0 lead, after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Davenport finished the scoring on Woodstock's next drive, laying in wait and stepping through an attempt at a middle screen to get the pick.

Cartersville (3-0) returns home on Friday, Sept. 11, to face West Forsyth at 7:30 p.m.
