Cartersville girls, Cass and Cartersville boys fall in Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday night
Region 7-5A top-seeded Calhoun led at the end of each quarter Wednesday night but the Lady Canes stayed within striking range throughout before falling to the Yellow Jackets, 55-50, in the region tournament semifinals.
Region Player of the Year, Britiya Curtis scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Sa’Niah Dorsey also reached double figures for Calhoun with 11 points.
Calhoun led 18-7 at the end of the opening eight minutes and 28-21 at halftime. Cartersville narrowed its deficit to 42-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kaytlin Arnold powered the Cartersville offense with 19 points. Ansley Griffin finished with 13. Ja’Kayah Draughn contributed nine. Nayel Camper had four points. Senai Camper and Taff Bradley added two points each.
Calhoun (21-4) advances to Friday night’s championship game at 7 p.m. where the Lady Jackets will face Hiram. Hiram edged Dalton 40-39 in the other region semifinal Wednesday.
Cartersville (16-9) will play Dalton in the region's third-place game Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Calhoun High School.
HIRAM 60, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 40
The third-ranked Hiram boys led Cartersville 27-19 at halftime and extended their lead to 46-29 by the end of the third quarter in an eventual 60-40 win over the Hurricanes in the Region 7-5A semifinals Wednesday night in Calhoun.
Four Hornets — Jay Boyd, Chase Tyler, Walt Matthew, and Sekai Lockhart — finished with double-digit scoring. Boyd had 15 points. Tyler scored 14. Matthew and Lockhart added 10 points each.
Jaylen Scott led Cartersville with 13 points. DJ Cain scored nine. Parnel Gamble finished with six. Romo Pace contributed five points. Ced McClinic posted four. Jamauri Brice and Kaden Baldwin added two and one points, respectively.
Hiram (23-2) advances to the Region 7-5A championship game Friday night against the host Calhoun Yellow Jackets.
Cartersville (12-15) will square off with Cass in the region’s third-place game at Calhoun on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
CALHOUN 67, CASS BOYS 62
The Cass and Calhoun boys teams split their regular season games with each team winning on the other’s home court.
Wednesday night, Calhoun won the rubber matchup, 67-62, on the Yellow Jackets’ home floor in the semifinals of the Region 7-5A tournament.
Calhoun led 17-14 after one quarter; 36-27 at the intermission; and 51-42 at the end of the third quarter before holding on for a five-point win.
Dylan Faulkner led the Yellow Jackets with 23 points. Daniel Streete tossed in 11 and Emaree Winston scored 10 points for Calhoun.
KJ Rogers paced the Colonels with 23 points. Jakai Baldwin followed with 14. Jelani Hames scored 13 points. Jayden Foster contributed seven. Sacovie White chipped in with six and Kevin Henderson added two for Cass.
Calhoun (14-11) reaches Friday’s Region 7-5A championship game against Hiram at 8:30 p.m.
Cass (13-13) will play Cartersville Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the region’s third-place game at Calhoun High School.
