Cartersville Little League 11U falls in state tournament opener


The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team dropped its 2022 Georgia Little League state tournament opener Saturday in Athens, 7-2, to Smyrna Little League.


Cartersville fell behind early and trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.


The locals scored twice in the fourth inning on five consecutive singles by Will Groce, Tyler Hickman, Demetrius Wynn, Braxton Lemon, and Blake Forstie. Groce had two hits total in the contest and Hickman also added a second safety with a double.


Hickman started on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss. He was touched for six runs (only three earned) on seven hits and three walks. Hickman fanned three. Wynn worked the final 2-2/3 innings on the bump without giving up a run. He yielded four hits and a pair of walks.


Cartersville falls to the loser’s bracket portion of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. They will play an elimination game Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against the Harris County/Athens loser.
