Cartersville Little League 11U falls in state tourney opener
The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team suffered a 10-0 loss to host Dudley Little League Saturday in the opening round of the state tournament for 9-11 year olds.
Dudley held a 3-0 lead after three innings and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth by posting seven, unearned runs. Cartersville committed three errors in the frame and had five defensive miscues in the game.
The locals utilized a quartet of pitchers in the loss.
Brody Jones was saddled with the decision, allowing just one earned run on one hit and three walks in the first inning and two-thirds. He struck out two. Luke Thompson followed with two and one-third innings of work on the mound. He yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits and sat down six.
Avery Slye was charged with six runs (no earned runs) on three hits with one strikeout while Will Phillips worked one-third of an inning and was charged with an unearned run on one hit.
Braden Slocumb had two hits for the Cartersville 11U offense. River Wade contributed a double and reached with one walk. Aiden Turner had the only other Cartersville base hit.
A pair of Dudley 11U pitchers combined for a dozen strikeouts.
Dudley advances to play Athens Little League 11U Sunday in the second round.
Cartersville will now play an elimination game Monday night at 8 p.m. against the loser of Sunday’s game between Toccoa and Northern-Columbus.
In other action a the 11U state tournament Saturday at Dudley Little League just west of Dublin, Northern-Columbus blanked Smyrna, 9-0.
