Cartersville Little League 11U survives elimination game; Cartersville 10U slips to loser's bracket


The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team survived an elimination game Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 win over host Athens Little League at Holland Park in Athens.


Cartersville, who lost to Smyrna 7-2 on Saturday in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament, advances to its next elimination game Monday night at 7 p.m. against the Warner Robins American/Franklin County loser.


With the score knotted at 4-4 in Sunday’s eventual win, Cartersville 11U took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the third inning. The locals then added two more runs in the top of the fourth and two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-4 victory.


Parker Huth, who also picked up the pitching win, had three hits and one RBI to help lead the Cartersville offense. Braxton Lemon also had three hits including a double with one RBI. Will Groce produced two hits including two doubles and three RBIs. Demetrius Wynn also produced a pair of hits including one double and two RBIs.


Rounding out the Cartersville attack, Max Stepp contributed a double and one RBI. Tyler Hickman had a double while Noah Leffew (RBI) and Blake Forstie added one hit apiece.


Huth finished the first four innings on the mound yielding four earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Huth fanned four.


Leffew and Braxton Harkness worked one scoreless inning each in relief. Leffew struck out two and Harkness fanned one.

The 2022 11U Georgia Little League state tournament continues in Athens through Thursday.


CARTERSVILLE 10U BASEBALL FALLS IN STATE TOURNEY OPENER

The Cartersville Little League 10U baseball team produced eight hits in their 2022 Georgia Little League state tournament opener but couldn’t crack the scoreboard in a 7-0 first round loss to Smyrna Little League.


The double-elimination 8-to-10 year old state tournament is being hosted by West Point Little League.


Smyrna 10U, who rattled off 13 hits in the contest, scored single runs in the first and third innings and led 2-0 heading into the fifth inning. Smyrna then posted three runs in the fifth and added two more in the top of the sixth securing their opening round win.


Brock Morris had two hits for Cartersville. Jack McCurry added a double while Anthony Hunt, Alec Higgins, Bennett Bryant, Easton Stephens, and Micah Henderson finished with one hit apiece.


Henderson started on the mound and worked into the fifth inning. He allowed four earned runs (five total) on nine hits and one walk. The Cartersville starter struck out five. Drew Morris (2 ER, 4H, 2BB, 1K) and Jack McCurry (0R, 0H) retired two outs each in relief.


Cartersville slips to the loser’s bracket and an elimination game Sunday night at 7 p.m. against either Northern-Columbus or Oconee County.
