Cartersville Little League 12U advances to District 1 championship round


Cartersville Little League 12U defeated Bartow County 4-3 in extra innings Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Crossing Park to advance to the championship round of the double-elimination Georgia Little League District 1 tournament.


Bartow posted a run in the top of the first inning and maintained that advantage until Cartersville tied the game in the fifth.


After a scoreless sixth inning, both teams scored one run in the first extra frame. In the eighth, Bartow took a 3-2 lead before Cartersville scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a walk-off win.


Avery Slye had two hits to lead the Cartersville offense. Cameron Kachinsky contributed a double while Colton Dunagan and Noah Kearney added one hit apiece.


Elijah Bryant led Bartow County with two hits. Huck Garlin, Blaine Groce, Grayson Isham, and Noah Rogers tossed in one hit apiece.


The loss sends Bartow County to an elimination game Monday night at 6 p.m. against Dalton. Bartow defeated Dalton 6-4 in the first round Saturday morning and Dalton survived an elimination game Sunday with a 14-9 win over Rockmart.


Cartersville will take Monday off to prepare for Tuesday’s championship round against the Bartow County/Dalton winner. Cartersville, now 2-0 in the tournament, will need one more win to capture the district title. The first championship game will be at 6 p.m. If the Bartow/Dalton survivor wins that first game, an “if needed” game will follow at 8 p.m. Tuesday.


BARTOW COUNTY, CARTERSVILLE LITTLE LEAGUE WIN DISTRICT OPENERS SATURDAY


The 12U Bartow County and Cartersville Little League teams won their first round games Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park as the 2022 Georgia District 1 double-elimination tournament got underway.


Bartow County defeated Dalton 6-4 and Cartersville beat Rockmart 10-1.


Bartow County led 4-0 through two innings before Dalton tied the score by the middle of the fifth inning. Two runs by Bartow County in the bottom of the fifth inning determined the final outcome.


Grayson Isham and Huck Garlin had two hits each for Bartow. Matt Zander contributed a triple. Blaine Groce, Aiden Pyke, and Cade McCorkle added one hit apiece.


In Cartersville’s win over Rockmart, the locals led 3-1 through three innings and broke the game open with three more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth inning.


Avery Slye led the way for Cartersville with four hits including two doubles. Tyler Hickman followed with a pair of hits. Jeremiah Huff contributed a double while Will Phillips, Colton Dunagan, Caden McMullin, and Aiden Turner each added one hit.


McMullin started on the mound for Cartersville. Slye pitched middle relief and Phillips closed out the final frame.
