Cartersville Little League Sandlot team splits tourney games

The host Cartersville Little League Sandlot (9-year-old) tournament team split games this weekend and has reached the semi-finals of the Northwest Georgia Sectional Tournament.

Cartersville lost to Smyrna Blue 7-1 in Saturday’s opening round at Rudy York Field, but bounced back in an elimination game Sunday afternoon to defeat Peachtree City, 18-2, in four innings.

Cartersville will next face Smyrna Red Monday night at 6 p.m. on Joe Frank Harris Field in another elimination game. The winner will need two wins Tuesday over Smyrna Blue in the Sectional finals of the double-elimination tournament.

In Sunday’s win, Sawyer Ezell led the Cartersville offense with a pair of triples and one home run. Hayden Stewart, Hayes Burris, Maddox Henderson, Micah Mitcham, and Henry Culverhouse had two hits each. Harris Pressley, Connor Murphy, Harry Baker, and Sawyer White added one hit each.

Henderson was Sunday’s winning pitcher.

In Saturday’s loss to Smyrna Blue, Cartersville’s only run came in the sixth inning after Smyrna had posted four runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth.

Sawyer Ezell, Harris Pressley, Micah Mitcham, and Sawyer White had the four Cartersville base hits.
