Cartersville's Waterman placed fourth at GHSA Girls Wrestling State Championships

Cartersville’s Elora Waterman placed fourth at the GHSA Girls Wrestling State Championships in the 102-pound division after going 4-2 in the tournament. Waterman advanced by forfeit in the opening round before losing in the state quarterfinals to Catarina Velasquez of Chestatee. She then won three consecutive bouts — two by pin — before losing in the third place match to Aneri Patel of Woodward Academy. Waterman’s wins included an 8-6 decision over Haley Zinninger of North Gwinnet and pin fall wins over Alexis Hart of Toombs County and Rachel Whetstone of Veterans.
Cartersville teammate Anetra Witherspoon (197) did not place in the state tournament, but did finish 2-2. Witherspoon lost her first round match by fall to Amariah Marenco of Carrollton. She then pinned Zyonna Walker of Northside and Raychel Caldwell of Lamar County to reach the third consolation round where she lost by pin to Rosali Oshodi of Hiram.
Cass wrestler Abigail Gentry (122) did not place and finished 1-2 at the state tournament. Gentry lost her opener by fall to Meta Xayabouth-Jones of Alexander. She then won a 5-1 decision over Arrie Battle of Jordan before losing in the second round of consolations to Jasmine Jenkins-Bey of Columbus.
