Cartersville soccer teams sweep region games at Hiram


The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams opened Region 7-AAAAA play Friday night with wins at Hiram.

The Lady Canes won 10-0 and the Cartersville boys defeated the Hornets 5-1.

Abbey Craig scored four goals — three in the first half — and added a first half assist as the Lady Canes scored six times before the intermission. Trista Kelly finished with a pair of goals. Kendyl Anderson had one goal and two assists. Hattie Williams had one goal and one assist. Ansley Holton and Devondria Johnson contributed one goal each. Emma Baker assisted on two goals while Ava Flemons and Jocelyn Fernandez added one assist each.

The Hiram girls fall to 0-6-2 with the loss.

The Lady Canes improved to 4-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in region action. The Cartersville girls play at Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will host Cass Friday at 5:30 p.m.

In the boys win, Joel Zazueta had a first half goal and an assist as the Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead by halftime. Zazueta assisted a Giovanni Jacobo goal to open the scoring and added a penalty kick goal in the 32nd minute for a 2-1 advantage.

Zazueta added another goal and two more assists in the second half. Antonio Garcia and Daniel Abeja scored off the Zazueta feeds.

Cartersville goalkeeper Collier Parker earned his first varsity win in net for the Canes.

Hiram slipped to 0-5 for the year and 0-1 in region play.

Cartersville (5-1-1, 1-0) hosts Southeast Whitfield Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Cass Friday at 7:30 p.m.
