Cartersville soccer teams sweep visiting Cass


The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams swept visiting Cass Friday night in Region 7-AAAAA action.


The wins keep both Cartersville teams unbeaten in region play heading into key region matchups Tuesday with Blessed Trinity.



CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CASS 0

Kendyl Anderson scored three goals and Abbey Craig registered a goal and an assist as the Lady Canes blanked visiting Cass Friday night, 5-0.

Anderson picked up the first goal off a rebound and put Cartersville up 2-0 off a designed corner kick and an assist from Maci Nicklas.

Hattie Williams gave Cartersville a 3-0 lead off an assist from Craig and then Craig scored a goal of her own off an assist from Ava Flemons to put the Lady Canes up 4-0 at the intermission.

Anderson completed her hat trick of goals early in the second half. The goal was a header off a long throw in from Devondria Johnson.

“The girls did a really good job of playing the way we want them to play,” said Cartersville head coach Chad Murray. “We possessed the ball well and made good passes forward. We defended well and pressured as well as we have all season. It was a good step forward for us.”

The loss drops the Cass girls to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Colonels travel to Hiram for another region game Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Cartersville (5-3-1, 2-0) hosts unbeaten Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.


CARTERSVILLE BOYS 3, CASS 2

The Canes’ Joel Zazueta scored a pair of goals including the game-winner off a free kick from Alex Rios in the final five minutes to edge visiting Cass Friday night, 3-2. Kaden Anderson gave Cartersville a first half lead with a goal in the game’s 25th minute after Rios sent a cross to the back side. The Canes took that 1-0 lead to the intermission. Cass tied the score 1-1 early in the second half, but Zazueta scored the first of his two goals with an upper corner shot from 25 yards out.

After the Colonels knotted the score for a second time a few minutes later, Zazueta added the deciding goal in the waning minutes.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Colonels and drops Cass to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Colonels travel to Hiram Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Cartersville (6-1-1, 2-0) hosts Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
