Cartersville softball secures region title with win over Cass; Woodland wins at Dalton


Ava Perkins earned the pitching win and smacked a two-run homer Thursday night as the Lady Canes locked up the No. 1 seed from Region 7-5A in the upcoming state playoffs.

Cartersville pitcher Ava Perkins tossed a complete-game, one-hitter Thursday night as the Lady Canes downed visiting Cass 5-1 and locked up the No. 1 seed from Region 7-5A in the upcoming Class 5A state playoffs.


Perkins allowed a first inning run and then shut down the Lady Colonels the rest of the way. She walked three and struck out seven.


Cartersville scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead and posted three runs in the sixth.


Perkins hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning. McKinley Chada (RBI), Erin McCrary (RBI), and Mikey Lewis each contributed doubles in the win. Jordan Bishop had the other Cartersville base hit.


Reese Howard had the Cass base hit. Emma Gibson (6 IP, 5R, 2ER, 6H, 0BB, 6K) took the pitching loss.


Cass (9-18, 6-8) closes out the regular season Tuesday at Woodland.


Cartersville (15-8-1, 13-1) has a non-region game at Sprayberry Monday and concludes regular season play Tuesday at Calhoun.



WOODLAND 13, DALTON 2

Cambrie Carrington had three hits including a grand slam and finished with five RBIs as the Lady Cats won Thursday at Dalton.

Cambrie Carrington had three hits including a fifth inning grand slam and finished with five RBIs as Woodland pounded out 14 total hits in a 13-2 win at Dalton.


Jordan Hammonds (double, two RBIs), Peyton Dorn (two doubles, one RBI), Mackenzie Araya (double, RBI), and Bailey Sakacsi all had two hits for the Lady Cats. Haley Collum (two RBIs) and Kamryn Smith contributed one hit each.


Collum (5 IP, 2ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K) earned the pitching victory by tossing a complete game.


The loss drops Dalton to 5-14 overall and 3-10 in Region 7-5A.


Woodland (14-15, 7-7) hosts Cass Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. with the winner securing the No. 3-seed in the state playoffs. The loser will be the No. 4-seed.



GORDON LEE 16, ADAIRSVILLE 1 Adairsville lost at Gordon Lee Thursday night in three innings. The Tigers slipped to 8-13-1 on the season and 3-10 in Region 6-AAA.


Adairsville scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Gordon Lee responded with six runs in the bottom of the first and ten more in the second inning.


McKenzie Pullam (triple) and Brie Patterson (double) had the only Adairsville hits. The win for the Lady Trojans helps them keep pace with LaFayette at the top of the region standings. Gordon Lee improved to 20-5 overall and 10-3 in Region 6-AAA.
