Cartersville takes region battle with Cass, 3-1


Elizabeth Nelson had a hit, stole a base, and scored the go-ahead run as the Lady Canes defeated Cass Thursday, 3-1.

Cartersville pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings Thursday night to defeat visiting Cass, 3-1, in Region 7-5A action.


Cass led 1-0 with a run in the top of the first driven home with a line drive single by Dariana Sosa.

Cartersville tied the score in the bottom of the fourth when Campbell Rogers tripled home a run.

In the fifth inning, Elizabeth Nelson singled to start the Canes’ frame. She then stole second and moved to third base on a sacrifice by Layne Callan. Kiley Arnold followed with a ground out to scored Nelson for a Cartersville 2-1 lead.


The Lady Canes added an insurance run in the next inning when Rogers doubled home Jordan Bishop.


Pitching on both sides was solid.


McKinley Chada (6 IP, 0R, 3H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville working six shutout innings in relief of Canes’ starter Kennedy Stevens (1 IP, 1ER, 4H).


Emma Gibson (6 IP, 3ER, 4H, 6BB, 5K) pitched all six innings for Cass striking out five.


Rogers led the Cartersville offense with two extra base hits and two RBIs. Erin McCrary and Nelson had the other Purple Hurricanes’ hits.


Ansley Hight had two hits for Cass including a triple. Sosa (RBI), Braelyn Franklin (triple), Haylee Dishmon, Reese Howard, and Alexis Woods had one hit each for the Lady Colonels.


Cass (5-4, 2-2) will play two games Saturday at North Paulding in the Allatoona Bucs Bash. The Colonels will face Lowndes at 10 a.m. and the host Wolfpack at 2 p.m.


Cartersville (4-5-1, 3-1) plays at Calhoun Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.
