Cass and Cartersville split soccer matches, Dalton teams defeat Woodland

The Cass Colonels secured a gritty 1-0 shutout victory over the Cartersville Hurricanes in a Region 7-AAAA boys soccer match played on Friday night at Cochran Stadium at Cass High School.
The lone goal came in the 30th minute when Francisco Castaneda found the back of the net, assisted by Miguel Padilla.
Cass head coach Lucas Kinsey praised the outstanding defensive effort of Karter Berdnik, who anchored the back line and thwarted several Cartersville scoring opportunities. Berdnik's highlight came with an impressive sliding save near the goal line while the Colonels' goalkeeper was out of position.
The win improved Cass to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAA. The Colonels will look to build momentum when they travel to face Hiram on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Cartersville dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in region play with the defeat. The Hurricanes will aim to get on the board when they host Dalton on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3, CASS GIRLS 1
The Cartersville Lady Canes earned a solid 3-1 victory over the Cass Lady Colonels Friday evening in a Region 7-AAAA girls soccer match played at Cochran Stadium on the campus of Cass High School.
Cartersville built a 2-0 lead by halftime and added one more goal in the second half to secure the win.
The Lady Colonels' lone tally came near the middle of the second half when Zoe Bailey converted a penalty kick.
The loss dropped Cass to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAA. The Lady Colonels will look to rebound when they travel to face Hiram on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Cartersville improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in region play with the result. The Lady Canes will next host Dalton on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
DALTON 8, WOODLAND BOYS 1
The Dalton Catamounts continued their dominant start to the season with a convincing 8-1 victory over the Woodland Wildcats in a Region 7-AAAA boys soccer match played at Harmon Field in Dalton.
Ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA by Score Atlanta, the undefeated Catamounts improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in region play with the win.
Woodland struck first, taking a quick 1-0 lead in the 4th minute when Aiden Carroll scored off an assist from Hunter Limbaugh on a free kick.
Dalton responded emphatically, erupting for five unanswered goals in the first half to take a commanding 5-1 lead into halftime. The Catamounts kept the pressure on after the break, adding three more goals in the second half to seal the victory.
In goal for Woodland, Seth Goodall made six saves before Pedro Mendez came in for relief and recorded three saves.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAA. Woodland will look to bounce back when it travels to face Allatoona on Tuesday.
DALTON 4, WOODLAND GIRLS 3
The Dalton Lady Catamounts edged out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Woodland Lady Cats in a Region 7-AAAA girls soccer match played Friday evening at Harmon Field in Dalton.
The win improved Dalton to 6-2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in region play.
Woodland fell to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAA following the close contest. The Lady Cats will look to get back on track when they host Cass on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
