Cass and Excel teams add region wins on Thursday night


Zion Hayes finished with a double-double Thursday night in the Lady Colonels' home win over Hiram.

The Cass Lady Colonels outlasted the visiting Hiram Lady Hornets 56-48 Thursday night at home for their second region win of the week.


Hiram led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter but Cass outdueled the Hornets 22-11 in the second quarter to take a 26-21 lead at the intermission. The Lady Colonels maintained a 39-36 advantage through three quarters and then held on down the stretch for an eight-point win.


Kiana McDaniel led the Lady Colonels in scoring with 20 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Zion Hayes contributed a double-double performance scoring 12 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Tamira Feanny scored 12 points and added eight boards. Nevaeh Woods and Kaitlyn Godwin rounded out the scoring with seven and five points, respectively.


Hadiya Kennerly and Taylor Crawford tied for scoring honors for the Lady Hornets with 11 points each. Aniyah White chipped in with eight points for Hiram (8-11, 1-4).


The Cass girls (13-7, 2-3 Region 7-5A) play at Cartersville on Friday night.



HIRAM 66, CASS BOYS 49


The Colonels fell behind Hiram in the early going Thursday night at home. Cass battled from behind to only trail 28-22 at halftime but the Hornets went on a run in the third quarter to pull away and the Colonels could not keep up in a 66-49 decision.


Four Hornets reached double figures in scoring with Chase Tyler’s 21 points leading the way. Ryan Williams scored 16 points. Mason McKinney produced 13 and Jaiden Moore totaled 12 points for Hiram (12-7, 5-0)


“Hiram is really long and really good,” said Cass coach Kevin Cunningham. “They went on a run in the third quarter and we couldn’t recover. All we can do is get ready for Cartersville tomorrow night.”


Kyron McClendon scored all 13 of his points for Cass in the second half. Comari Nettles, Jayden Foster, and Dylan Miller finished with eight points each. Jakai Baldwin added seven.


Cass (5-11, 1-4) plays at Cartersville on Friday night.



EXCEL CHRISTIAN GIRLS 47, PRAISE ACADEMY 27


The Lady Eagles improved to 4-8 on the season and 2-4 in GAPPS Region 1-IA with a 20-point win on Thursday night.


The loss dropped Praise to 1-15 on the season and 0-5 in region play.


The Excel girls (4-8, 2-4) play at Unity Christian on Thursday, February 1.




EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS (6-16, 4-1) defeated PRAISE ACADEMY (1-17, 1-4)
