Cass girls reach tourney finals; Cartersville teams fall at Calhoun
The Cass Lady Colonels beat Pickens Friday night 91-66 in the semifinals of the Gordon Lee / Chattooga Christmas Tournament.
Londaisha Smith scored 34 points and Claire Davis had 27 in the Cass victory.
The Lady Colonels led 24-17 after one quarter and were ahead 44-29 at halftime. Cass led 72-48 after three quarters on their way to the 25-point win.
Mykenzie Weaver and Sarah Morris led the ‘Nettes with 20 and 17 points, respectively.
Rounding out the Cass scoring were Justice Bennett with eight points; Haley Johnson seven; Ariana Hames five; Taryn Callahan four; Amaya Ford three; Tatiana Christian two; and Keara McDaniel scored one point.
The win by the Lady Colonels (8-4) puts them in Saturday’s tournament championship game against Dade County. The Wolverines beat Gordon Lee in the other semifinal game Friday.
CALHOUN 38, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 21
The Lady Canes struggled scoring Friday night in a 38-21 road loss at Calhoun.
The host Jackets led 12-2 after one quarter, 22-6 at halftime, and 31-14 through three quarters.
Lyndi Rae Davis scored 12 points for Calhoun. She was followed by teammates Britiya Curtis and Anna Georgia with 10 and eight points, respectively.
“Nothing went well,” said Lady Canes head coach Cindy Moore. “Our shots were not falling and we didn’t get to the free throw line the entire game. We will have to bounce back (Saturday) against Woodland.
Lehla Thomas led Cartersville with eight points. Jakayah Draughn followed with five.
Calhoun improved to 6-4 on the season with the victory.
Cartersville (4-4) entertains Woodland Saturday at 3 p.m.
CALHOUN 69, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 66
The Cartersville boys trailed by seven points heading into the final eight minutes Friday night at Calhoun and made a dramatic run at the Yellow Jackets, but came up short in a 69-66 non-region loss.
Calhoun led 20-17 after one quarter and was up 33-27 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets led 54-47 heading into the final period.
“We were down by two with six seconds remaining and shooting two free throws,” Canes coach Mike Tobin said Friday night after the game. “We made the first free throw and got two offensive rebound putbacks after the second shot was missed, but neither shot fell.”
Gage Maffetone led Calhoun with 21 points. Caleb Boone and Jaylan Harris both scored 13 for the Yellow Jackets.
Kolbe Benham led a balanced Cartersville scoring attack with 16 points. Robert Novak and Kam Callahan followed with 15 points each. Micah Tart contributed 14 for the Canes. Marquail Coaxum added six points.
Calhoun improved to 8-1 on the season with their win.
Cartersville (1-3) hosts Woodland Saturday at The Storm Center at 4:30 p.m.
