Cass wins Region 7-AAAAA Team Duals Championship


The Cass wrestling team won the Region 7-AAAAA Team Duals Championship Saturday with a 52-24 win over county rival Woodland in the title match.

Cass defeated Calhoun in the semifinals 51-12 to reach the championship match. Calhoun ultimately finished third in the tournament, followed by Blessed Trinity, Cartersville, and HIram.

Woodland defeated Blessed Trinity in the other region semifinal match.

In the Colonels’ win over Calhoun seven of the ten Cass bout wins were by pin and two by forfeit. Lee Camp (106), A.J. Piatt (113), Cole Hunt (126), Jake Crapps (132), Bryce Kresho (138), and Tyler McKnight (145), and Anthony Alcazar (heavyweight) each earned pins. William Buttram (220) also collected a bout victory while Abby Gentry (120) and Eli Doolittle (152) won by forfeit.

In the finals, Woodland picked up wins by heavyweight Beau Jernigan and Caleb Henson (152) to go with forfeits collected by Colby Cochran (170) and Charles Higdon (195).

The Colonels’ wins in the championship match included Camp (106), Piatt (113), Hunt (126), Crapps (132), Kresho (138), Doolittle (145), Kriecg Roe (160), Zach McKnight (182), and William Buttram (220). Gentry (120) picked up a victory by forfeit.

Cartersville finished fifth for the day just missing next weekend’s state preliminaries. The Hurricanes opened the tournament with losses to Blessed Trinity (46-32) and Calhoun (48-31), but finished fifth by defeating Hiram 42-39.

Five Canes went unbeaten on the day.

Grant Adams (106, 2-0), Eaiden Neal (113, 2-0), Talan Nix (132, 2-0), Giles Turner (138, 2-0), and Shadre Hurst (heavyweight, 1-0) finished the day with a clean slate.

Both Cass and Woodland advance to the Class AAAAA State Preliminaries that begin next Saturday. The Colonels will host Northview with Mundy’s Mill and Veterans assigned to the same portion of the preliminary bracket. Woodland travels to Ware County where the Wildcats will square off in the first round against St. Pius X. Forest Park and Ware County are also in that portion of the Class AAAAA bracket.

Also advancing from Region 7-AAAAA were Blessed Trinity and Calhoun. The Titans face Southwest DeKalb in next week’s first round while Calhoun will meet Stone Mountain.


TIGERS PLACE FOURTH IN AREA IV-AAA

The Adairsville Tigers’ wrestling team finished fourth Friday and Saturday at the Class AAA Area IV Team Duals Championships hosted by Rockmart High School.

The host Yellow Jackets came away as the Area champions followed by runner-up Westminster, Greater Atlanta Christian, and Adairsville.

The Tigers advance to the Class AAA State Preliminaries next Saturday at Pike County in Zebulon. Adairsville will square off against the host Pirates in the opening round. Coahulla Creek and Hart County are also assigned to that same portion of the Class AAA bracket.
