Cass wins second straight at Dalton

Chase Tatum pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning Wednesday night as the Colonels pulled out a 7-4 extra innings win at Dalton.

It took nine innings Wednesday night in Dalton, but the Cass Colonels were triumphant in their second region game of the year on the Catamounts home field, 7-4.


Cass got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening inning and made it 3-0 in the fourth. Dalton scored twice in the fourth to narrow the margin to 3-2. The Colonels added a run in the sixth to go up 4-2 before Dalton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest into extra innings.


Following a scoreless eighth inning, Cass strung together four straight hits and took advantage of a Catamounts error in the top of the ninth for the deciding runs.


Chase Tatum (2 IP, 0R 2H, 1BB, 4K) picked up the Colonels’ pitching win by shutting out Dalton over the last two innings.


Trenton Payne (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 7K) made a four-inning start for Cass on the mound. Justin Peace (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 2K) and Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Colonels.


All nine players in the Colonels’ lineup had at least one hit in their 14-hit attack.


Payne and Jesiel Moctezuma had three hits, including one double each to lead the way. Cayden Roberts contributed two hits, including one double and one RBI. Hunter Lovett (RBI), Tatum (RBI), Nic Wright (double, RBI), Connor Jenkins (RBI), Caleb Freeman (double, RBI), and Hutchinson (RBI) added one hit.


Cass (10-6, 2-0) will host Dalton (5-9, 1-4) in the final game of their region series on Thursday at 5:55 p.m.
