Chargers fall to top-ranked Senators in first game of Appalachian District Championship series


Georgia Highlands lost the first game in their best-of-three Appalachian District Championship series at No. 1-ranked Walters State Tuesday afternoon, 4-3.


The game was tied 2-2 through four innings before the host Senators grabbed a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.


David Smith hit a solo home run for the Chargers in the top of the eighth to narrow the lead to 4-3, but GHC got no closer.


Gage Vailes was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Georgia Highlands. He went the distance and gave up only three earned runs on seven hits and three walks in eight innings.


Conner Todaro produced the 16th-ranked Chargers first run with a first inning solo home run. David Smith drove in Max Kops with the second GHC run in the top of the third inning with a groundout.


In addition to the two solo home runs, the Chargers had six other hits.


Ben Olson had a triple. Kops, Parker Poteet, Caden Smith, Zayd Brannigan, and Mick Moody added one hit each for Georgia Highlands (44-10).



Walters State CC improved to 56-5 on the season.


Game 2 of the series is Wednesday at 2 p.m.
