Chargers open conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Andrew College
The Georgia Highlands Chargers opened Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference play Saturday with a pair of wins over Andrew College.
Georgia Highlands’ Joe Sutton hit a pair of home runs and finished with four hits while Johnny Dow scattered nine hits and struck out eleven as the Chargers beat visiting Andrew College 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at LakePoint Sports in Emerson.
Sutton hit solo home runs in the first and eighth innings and added singles in the third and sixth innings to complete a 4-for-4 performance. Trace Twardoski also homered for the Chargers.
Chase Townsend earned a save by closing out the ninth.
In the seven inning second game of the doubleheader, the Chargers trailed into the fifth inning before making a late comeback.
The visiting Tigers led 4-0 in the fifth inning when GHC cut the lead in half on a Mick Moody solo home run, a triple by Omar Daniels, and an RBI single by Brandon Prince.
After Andrew added a run in the sixth with a homer, the Chargers took the lead for good with a five-hit frame. Joe Sutton singled and scored on an RBI double by David Smith. Ben Olson drove in a run with a base hit, and Moody delivered an infield single that enabled two more runs.
Georgia Highlands (23-3, 2-0) returns to action Tuesday at LakePoint with a conference doubleheader against East Georgia at 2 p.m.
