Chargers open series with win at South Georgia State

Georgia Highlands won the first game of this week’s four-game series with South Georgia State winning on the road Tuesday afternoon, 11-3.


The Chargers took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Zayd Brannigan’s grand slam home run and a Conner Todaro RBI single. They added single runs in the third and fifth innings and a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.


South Georgia scored a run in the third to narrow their deficit to 6-1. They also scored single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings that made the score 9-3 at the time.


Max Kops produced three hits including a pair of doubles and two RBIs to lead the GHC attack. Parker Poteet followed with a triple, a double, a sac fly, and three RBIs. Brannigan also had two hits including his grand slam and Ben Olson also collected a pair of hits. Conner Todaro drove in one run with a hit. Mick Moody doubled and David Smith contributed one base hit.


Three different Hawks had two hits each.


Baylor Akin (7 IP, 3ER, 8H, 3BB, 7K) earned the pitching win for the Chargers. Cason Rich (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) closed out the final frame.


South Georgia State (26-12, 7-2) and Georgia Highlands (32-3, 8-1) will continue their conference series with a single game Friday (3 pm) and a doubleheader Saturday (1 pm) hosted by the Chargers at LakePoint.
