Chargers' softball splits DH with Andrew College
Georgia Highlands softball won the second game of a conference doubleheader Tuesday over visiting Andrew College, 7-6, to earn a split on the day.
The Chargers fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, rallied in the middle innings to go ahead 7-4, and then held on in the seventh inning to escape with a one-run victory.
Maggie Schandera (5.2 IP, 2ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K), Gracee Ellis (0.1 IP, 4ER, 5H), and Katie Traynor (1 IP, 0R, 0H) pitched for Georgia Highlands in the win.
Audrey Johnson hit a grand slam and doubled for the Chargers’ offense. Madison Dennis finished with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Haley Overton also had two hits for GHC.
Andrew College moves to 8-22 on the season and 2-4 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings.
Georgia Highlands (10-22, 3-3) hosts East Georgia State in a conference doubleheader Friday at Stars Park beginning at 1 p.m.
ANDREW COLLEGE 9, GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 6
In an outstanding offensive showing by both teams, the Andrew Lady Tigers captured the first game Tuesday with a 9-6 win at Stars Field. The two teams combined for 29 hits and three home runs in the conference battle.
Andrew led 6-0 early, but Georgia Highlands tied the game heading into the seventh inning. The Tigers then posted a three-run seventh in their eventual win.
Emily Phillips, Alexis Copeland, and Taryn Strayer combined for seven hits and six RBIs for the Tigers. Phillips’ three hits included a double and Strayer homered.
Dale Elmore (6.2 IP, 5ER, 11H, 2BB, 6K) earned the pitching win for Andrew. Haliley Stovall (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H) retired one out in the fifth inning in the circle.
Audrey Johnson had three hits and two RBIs for the Chargers. Hailey Cronic had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Haley Overton and Allison Deweese both finished with two hits and one RBI. Deweese homered for her RBI.
Madison Dennis, Bradey Tharp, Malone Aldridge, Emma Veitch, and Annsley Todd added one hit each in the Georgia Highlands’ attack.
Katie Traynor (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB) was tagged with the pitching loss for GHC in relief. Haley Robinson (5.2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 11H, 2BB, 2K) started in the circle for the Chargers. Maggie Schandera (0.1 IP) also pitched.
