Chargers split softball DH at South Georgia State; Hand throws no-hitter


Georgia Highlands College pitcher Jaycie Hand tossed a five-inning no-hitter Friday as the Chargers blanked South Georgia State 17-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Carrollton High product needed just 51 pitches and struck out two with no walks. The Chargers' defense committed one error, ending the lefty’s bid for a perfect game.


Meanwhile, the GHC offense exploded for two runs or more in each inning after the first.

Madison Dennis had three hits including a triple, a double, and three RBIs. Abigail Lathrop (RBI), Audrey Johnson (RBI), and Brady Tharp contributed two hits each. Allison Deweese (double, four RBIs), Malone Aldridge (two RBIs), Jordan Blair (double, two RBIs), and Taylor Justice (triple, two RBIs) added one hit each.


South Georgia State won the opening game, 6-5.


The Hawks outhit Georgia Highlands ten to six in the first game.


Rena Fraga (5 IP, 5R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Emma Veitch (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) retired the final three outs in the circle.


Avery Fisher had two hits including a double and one RBI. Tharp and Johnson also doubled with two RBIs each. Aldridge and Lathrop added one hit each.


Following the doubleheader split, South Georgia is 6-24 overall and 1-3 in the GCAA.


Georgia Highlands (10-18, 4-4) visits Chattanooga State Wednesday for a non-conference twin bill before hosting South Georgia State next Saturday (March 25).
