Chargers start conference play with a win at home

Georgia Highlands College baseball scored seven runs in their final two frames Tuesday to overcome an 8-2 deficit in a 9-8 home conference victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The visiting Stallions scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, and five more in the sixth inning to build an early lead.
A big, two-out double by Ryan Wideman drove in three runs for the Chargers in the seventh inning. In the next inning, GHC took advantage of three hits, a hit batsman, and three walks to plate four runs and grab a 9-8 advantage.
Kyle Stephenson (2.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win in relief. Starter Oliver Wood (5 IP, 3ER, 7H, 0BB, 4K) pitched the first five innings. Hunter Ward issued one walk but closed out a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for a save.
Six Chargers had two hits paced by Wideman with a double, a walk, and four RBIs. Grayson Godbee (double, RBI), Will Cawthon, Barrett Eldridge, and Gray Wilson (double) also had two hits. Ryan Martin (two RBIs), Luke Orfi (triple), and Ali Banks (RBI) added one hit.
Former Cartersville Hurricane, Drew Rothschild, had a big homecoming for the Stallions. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in ABAC’s loss.
Georgia Highlands (29-2, 1-0) travels to ABAC (8-15, 0-1) to complete the four-game series with a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
