Chargers surge past Hawks in GCAA opener

Georgia Highlands College baseball won its Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association opener on Tuesday afternoon, defeating visiting South Georgia State 13-3 in seven innings.
South Georgia tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Chargers responded with 10 unanswered runs over their next three frames to end the game early.
Georgia Highlands outhit the Hawks thirteen to four.
David McKechnie picked up the pitching victory with a five-inning start. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while fanning eight. Braxton Wade worked two shutout innings to close out the win. Wade yielded only one hit with no walks in the sixth and seventh innings.
Every Charger in the batting order had at least one hit, led by Carson Page with four hits and one RBI. Emiliano Dominguez had two hits and one RBI. Andrew Bishop (home run, three RBI), Harper Davenport (home run, three RBI), Mason Moore (home run, two RBI), Wyatt Gatlin (double, sac fly, RBI), Caden Marcos, Aidan Larkin, and Hayden Miller (triple) each added one hit.
The loss dropped South Georgia State to 15-10 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Georgia Highlands (21-7, 1-0) welcomes Andrew College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
