Chargers sweep Roane State


The Georgia Highlands Chargers got back to their winning ways Tuesday earning a doubleheader sweep over Roane State CC at LakePoint.


The two wins continued a current three-game win streak following a pair of losses over the weekend in the Chargers’ three-game series with Wabash Valley College.


In Tuesday’s opener, GHC took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Raiders’ pitching stumbled. The Chargers posted seven more runs in the inning with just one hit to win 10-1. Five walks and three hit batsmen contributed to the Georgia Highlands run production.


Max Kops had two hits. Ethan Anderson hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs. Ben Olson (2 RBIs), Parker Poteet (double, RBI), Caden Smith (RBI), and Zayd Brannigan (double, RBI) had the other hits.


Jacob Ryan (6 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 8K) fanned eight and earned the pitching win. Garrett Sagro (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) closed out the final frame with a pair of strikeouts.


In Game 2, the Chargers won in extra innings after coming from behind late in the game.


Poteet led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off, solo home run to lift GHC, 7-6.


Roane State led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh but the Chargers tied the game with a two-run home run by David Smith. The blast scored Conner Todaro who had doubled earlier in the inning.


Chandler Wood (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3K) picked up the pitching win and was one of five Chargers’ hurlers utilized in the win. Baylor Akin (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K), Hunter Goodwin (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K), Zach Murray (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K), and Ryan Suppa (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) also took the mound for GHC.


Smith had two hits including his homer and three RBIs. Ben Olson had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Poteet had two hits including his game-winner and Todaro had two hits including his important seventh inning double. Max Kops had the other Georgia Highlands’ hit.


Roane State slipped to 8-11 on the season with the two losses.


Georgia Highlands (19-2) plays at Chattahoochee Valley Sunday at 1 p.m.
