Chargers sweep Tigers, climb above .500 in conference play


Georgia Highlands College softball won both games of a doubleheader Sunday at Andrew College winning 7-5 and 8-4.


The Chargers built a 7-1 lead by the third inning of the first game and held on behind a solid pitching performance by starter Maggie Schandera.


The second game was more of a back-and-forth battle with both teams holding early leads but heading into the fifth inning tied 4-4. Georgia Highlands posted four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good and an 8-4 victory.


Chargers pitcher Madalyn Morton picked up the second game win in the cirlcle by working the final five innings. She allowed only one unearned run on two hits and a walk while fanning five.


Madison Bennett and Madeline Hairston led the GHC offense in the doubleheader with three hits each. Bennett scored two runs and drove in three. Hairston scored one run.


Ansley Todd had a pair of doubles on the day with five RBIs. Hailey Cronic finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Both Todd and Cronic scored one run.

Izzy Marcotte hit a home run with three RBIs. Natalia Herrera (2 RBIs), Taryn Hitchcock, Allison Daffron, Bradey Tharp (RBI), and Hannah Bobo added one hit apiece.

With the two losses, Andrew fell to 9-39 on the season and 2-18 in the GCAA.


Georgia Highlands (15-18, 10-8) will host a doubleheader with South Georgia CC Tuesday and travel to ABAC Saturday and South Georgia State Sunday to complete the regular season.
