Chargers take DH with Monarchs


Georgia Highlands College baseball swept a doubleheader with Macomb CC (Michigan) Sunday at LakePoint, winning 16-5 and 9-2 over the Monarchs.


In the first game, the Chargers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and added nine more over the next three innings for a runaway win.


Four Georgia Highlands pitchers — Gage Vailes, Garrett Sagro, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe, and Bubba Luke — combined to limit Macomb to just three earned runs on six hits and four walks. Vailes recorded six strikeouts in the first four innings to earn the win.


Ethan Anderson had three hits for the Chargers including a double and one RBI. Ben Olson had two hits including a grand slam. Caden Smith (2 RBIs) and Zayd Brannigan also finished with two hits including a double each. David Smith contributed a double and three RBIs and Conner Todaro tossed in one hit. Austin Slate, Parker Poteet, and Austin Tienda each added one RBI.


The Chargers’ offense continued its success in Game 2.


GHC scored in each of the first four frames and grabbed an early 9-0 lead before finishing off the Monarchs in a seven-run win.


Eric Moore (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 7H, 1BB, 10K) struck out ten in a six inning start for the Chargers. Zachary Murray (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) wrapped up the final inning on the mound with a pair of strikeouts.


Ben Olson paced the Chargers’ attack with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Caden Smith had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Conner Todaro also finished with two hits and two RBIs and Parker Poteet contributed a two hit game. Ethan Anderson drove in two runs with one hit. Max Kops, David Smith, and Mick Moody added one hit apiece.


Macomb falls to 1-9 on the season with the two losses.


Georgia Highlands (23-2) will square off with the Monarchs again Monday in an 11 a.m. first pitch at LakePoint before hosting Cleveland State CC Tuesday (3 p.m.) and a doubleheader with Brewton Parker College Wednesday (1 p.m.)
