Chargers take three of four from Hawks

Georgia Highlands baseball split a home doubleheader with South Georgia State on Saturday losing the opener 4-1 but winning the second game, 8-0.


The Saturday split means the Chargers won three of four games this week in their conference series with the Hawks.


Trip Dovale pitched a gem in the opening game for Georgia Highlands and carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning before succumbing to a loss. Dovale went 6-⅓ and was charged with a second and third earned run in the top of the seventh. He walked two and struck out five. Reece Robertson (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1K) and Trace Horne (0.1 IP, 1BB) retired one out each in the final frame.


The Chargers couldn’t solve Hawks pitcher Nathan Webb who fanned nine while scattering three hits and three walks to earn the victory.


Luke Orfi (double), Ryan Wideman, and Ryan Martin had the GHC hits in the loss.


In the series finale, Chargers pitcher Chandler Anderson dominated from the mound. He tossed a seven-inning complete game and yielded just two hits and two walks while striking out two.The Georgia Highlands offense was anchored by Wideman who was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. Orfi followed with two hits. Barrett Eldridge (double, two RBIs), Martin (solo home run), and Clay Wiesen added one hit.


South Georgia State moves to 23-23 overall and 6-10 in conference play.


The Chargers (39-7, 11-5 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) have a four-game conference series coming up with Andrew College. GHC will host Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will play three games in Cuthbert on Friday and Saturday.
