Clyburn finishes top twenty at GSGA State Amateur Championship


R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville shot rounds of 73-70-75-72 for a 2-over-par 290 total and a tie for 20th Thursday through Sunday at the 101st Georgia State Golf Association State Amateur Championship played at the 7,094-yard, par-72 The Landings Club - Deer Creek in Savannah.

William Love of Atlanta held on during the final round to win the championship by two shots over Duluth’s Billy Abdow. Love shot 69-67-68-76 to finish at 8-under par 280. Abdow carded rounds of 73-69-66-74. Logan Perkins of Locust Grove was third at 283 followed by Bruce Murphy (Johns Creek) and John Daniel Culbreth (Thomasville) at 4-under-par 284 to round out the top five.

Clyburn’s four day performance included a pair of weekend eagles on par-4 holes. He also carded 13 birdies during the championship including birdies on the final two holes to climb into the top twenty.


Lee Bowman, a Marietta resident and Cartersville Country Club member, also qualified for the 144-player field but missed the 36-hole cut after shooting 73-78—151 and a tie for 69th. The field was cut to the low 60 players and ties following the first two rounds.
