Colonels drop a pair of region games to Calhoun
Cass baseball lost both games of a Region 7-5A home doubleheader with Calhoun Friday night at the Cass Athletic Complex, 9-4 in extra innings and 16-0.
The Colonels held leads of 2-0 in the first inning, 3-2 in the third, and 4-3 through five innings in the first game before Calhoun sent the game to extra innings with a run in the top of the sixth.
The 5th-ranked Yellow Jackets then scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure their win. A two-run double by Kris Sutton and a three run home run by Andon Lewis were the big blows for Calhoun.
Hayden Cole had a pair of doubles and three RBIs for Cass. Aidan Larkin also had two hits including a double and Carson Hill contributed a double with one RBI. Chase Botts and Todd Gaddy added one hit each for the Colonels.
In the second game, Calhoun took a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning and took advantage of thirteen walks by Cass pitchers to close out the nightcap in just four inning.
The Yellow Jackets’ Cooper Evans tossed a four-inning no hitter with three walks and ten strikeouts. Evans also had two hits including a double and three RBIs to lead the Calhoun offense.
Calhoun improved to 15-4 on the season and 5-2 in Region 7-5A.
Cass (5-16, 4-5) steps out of region play next week to participate in the Battle for Bartow Classic at LakePoint in Emerson. The Colonels will play Sandy Creek, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, next Thursday at 4 p.m. Cass will then face Locust Grove (RV, Class 5A) and Ringgold (RV, Class 3A) Friday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
