Colonels even series with Calhoun; Adairsville pounds Ramblers

Cass evened its Region 7-5A series with Calhoun on Thursday night by winning on the Yellow Jackets’ home field, 14-4, in six innings.


The Colonels posted three runs in the top of the first inning including a Chase Tatum home run. The score remained 3-0 until Cass added two more runs in the top of the fourth to go up 5-0.


In the top of the fifth inning, the Colonels produced four consecutive hits, took advantage of a Yellow Jackets’ error, and Connor Jenkins hit a two-run home run to put Cass up 10-0. 


Calhoun got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the inning but the Colonels answered with four more runs in the top of the sixth — including Nic Wright’s three-run home run — to lead 14-1. 


Calhoun plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth but failed to extend the game to a seventh inning.


Trenton Payne collected the pitching win for the Colonels allowing just one run on one hit and four walks. He struck out nine in five innings on the bump. Justin Peace (1 IP, 3ER, 2H) pitched in the sixth inning.


Four Colonels finished with two hits. 


Hunter Lovett (double, RBI), Tatum (HR, four RBIs), Jenkins (HR, three RBIs), and Payne (two doubles, two RBIs) contributed two hits. Wright (HR, three RBIs), Cayden Roberts (RBI), and Jesiel Moctezuma added one hit.


Cass (12-7, 4-1) hosts Calhoun (5-12, 1-4) in the series finale on Friday at 5:55 p.m.



ADAIRSVILLE 11, LAFAYETTE 1


LaFayette scored first on Thursday night at Adairsville but the Tigers gained the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning on their way to an 11-1 victory in six innings.


Adairsville led 2-1 after one inning; 6-1 after two innings; and added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game by mercy run rule.


McCayden Hufstetler picked up the pitching win for the Tigers by tossing a six-inning, three-hitter. He walked three and fanned four.


Braxton Ryan had three hits with a double and two RBIs to pace the Adairsville attack. Peyton Bowen (double, RBI) and Easton Elrod contributed two hits. Hayden Blalock (two RBIs), Jarrett Scott (two RBIs), Jack Nelson (RBI), and Lucas Henry (RBI) added one hit. PJ Weeks was credited with one RBI.


Adairsville (10-5, 3-2) completes the two-game series at LaFayette (8-10, 1-4) on Friday at 5:55 p.m.
