Colonels fall at Mountain Classic
Playing against the host team at the Mountain Classic in Jasper, the Cass baseball team grabbed an early lead Saturday morning but Pickens answered with single runs in the bottom of the first, third, and fifth innings to defeat the Colonels, 3-1.
Dragons’ starting pitcher AJ Rice (5 IP, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 9K) struck out nine over the first five innings to keep the Cass offense handcuffed. Tee Knight (1 IP, 0R, 1H) and JP Nunn (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) each worked a scoreless frame.
Carson Hill (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 5K) started on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts (2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB) retired the final six outs on the mound.
Connor Shouse had two hits including a triple and one RBI to lead the Dragons' offense.
Chase Tatum tripled for the Cass offense. Hunter Lovett and Connor Jenkins had the only other Cass base hits.
Pickens improved to 5-2 on the season.
Cass (2-2) returns to action Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Southeast Whitfield.
