Colonels fall twice at Northwest Whitfield


The Cass Colonels were swept in a doubleheader Saturday at Northwest Whitfield, 10-1 and 7-4.

The Bruins out hit Cass twelve to four in the opener with Aiden Hosford, Keaton McQuaig, and Matt Redmond combining for eight hits including two doubles and a triple, five runs scored, and five RBIs.

McQuaig also tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts to earn the win.

Trey Scott (3 IP, 7R, 6ER, 7H, 3BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for the Colonels. Chase Botts (2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) and Aidan Cottingim (1 IP, 0R, 1H) also pitched.

Matt Shook and Carson Hill had doubles for the Cass offense. Alex Freeman had a hit and drove in the only Cass run. Nic Wallin added one hit.

In Game 2 in Tunnel Hill, Hosford scattered five hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort as Northwest defeated Cass 7-4. Cass tied the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but the Bruins built a 7-3 lead with runs in each of their final four frames. The Colonels added a run in the top of the seventh for the 7-4 final score.

Jordan Gani (3.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 7H, 3BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Thomas Botts (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) and Shook (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief.

Will Roper, McQuaig, Hosford, and Gavin Morgan had two hits each for Northwest Whitfield. McQuaig hit a two-run home run in the second inning and finished with four RBIs. Roper, Hosford, and Morgan added one RBI each. Shook had two hits including a triple and two RBIs for the Colonels. Bentley Markley contributed a double and two RBIs. Aidan Larkin doubled and Jayden Smith added one hit.

The Bruins improved to 6-2-1 with their two wins. Cass (1-8) will look to snap a six-game losing skid Tuesday in their Region 7-AAAAA opener at Woodland.
