Colonels fast start extinguishes Dragons in first round of state tourney

Sacovie White led five Colonels in double-digit scoring Wednesday night as the Colonels won at Jefferson, 68-49.

The Cass boys basketball team raced to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter Wednesday night at Jefferson and maintained a nice lead throughout in a 68-49 first round win in the Class 5A State Tournament.


The Colonels led 40-20 at halftime and led 56-32 at the end of the third quarter on their way to a 19-point victory.


Sacovie White led five Cass starters in double figures with 17 points. Jakai Baldwin followed with 13. Jayden Foster scored 12 points. Devin Henderson finished with 11 and Jelani Hames tossed in 10 points. Jason Brown Harmon and Tayvion McKibbons added three and two points, respectively.


Jaden Butts and Micah Hooper led the Dragons (10-18) with 12 and 10 points.


Cass (15-13) advances to the Class 5A Sweet Sixteen round and will visit Region 5-5A champion Chapel Hill Saturday. The Panthers (21-8) beat Chattahoochee 60-51 in Wednesday’s opening round.
