Colonels, Lady Colonels win at Riverwood

The Cass High basketball teams earned a pair of non-region wins Monday night in Atlanta at Riverwood.
The Lady Colonels cruised to a 62-32 win over the Lady Raiders and the Cass boys used a strong defensive fourth quarter to down the Raiders 82-73.
CASS GIRLS 62, RIVERWOOD 32
Claire Davis scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Monday night at Riverwood to help lead the Lady Colonels to a 62-32 win. Cass led 15-4 after one quarter and carried a 31-18 lead to the intermission on their way to a 30-point win. Keara McDaniel scored nine points for the Lady Colonels. Miya Winston followed with seven points, four assists, and three steals. Haley Johnson finished with six points and five assists. Justice Bennett scored four points and contributed 14 rebounds. Mikaela Jackson, Zion Hayes, Kiana McDaniel, and Darianna Sosa all scored three points apiece.
Hannah McConnell led the Lady Raiders with 11 points.
The Cass girls (7-1, ranked 10th in Class 5A) head to the Carroll County Christmas Tournament starting Thursday at Temple High School. The Lady Colonels open the three day tournament against Pebblebrook at 4 p.m.
CASS BOYS 82, RIVERWOOD 73
The Colonels earned a hard-fought road win Monday night at Riverwood in Atlanta, 82-73. In a back-and-forth struggle, Cass led 20-18 after one quarter and went to the intermission knotted at 37 with the Raiders. Riverwood moved ahead 62-60 by the end of the third quarter but Cass outscored the Raiders 22-11 in the final eight minutes to ease away with a nine-point win.
“We played solid defense down the stretch tonight,” said Cass coach Byron Taylor. “We made some key stops and used those stops to score in transition. It was absolutely a team win.”
Ethan McIntyre led four Colonels in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Jackson Hale scored 16. Jelani Hames produced 14 points and Jayden Foster contributed 12. Kaden Baldwin followed with eight points. Sacovie White scored seven. Devin Henderson finished with four points and Jashaun Whatley added two points for Cass.
Karris Bilal scored a game-high 32 points for Riverwood. Jalen Leonard added 24 for the Raiders (1-7).
Next up for the Colonels will be the Lemon Street Classic which starts Saturday at Marietta High School. Cass (4-5) is scheduled to face St. Anne-Pacelli of Columbus in a 12:45 p.m. tip.
