Cass shortstop and leadoff hitter, Jesiel Moctezuma.

The Cass Colonels rode the outstanding pitching performances by starter Chase Tatum and relievers Devan Hutchinson and Hunter Lovett to win a low-scoring, 2-0 decision Friday at Campbell in Smyrna.

Tatum scattered three hits and two walks in four scoreless innings to start the game on the mound. Hutchinson did not allow a hit or a walk in his two innings, and Lovett picked up a save with a scoreless final frame. The trio combined for five strikeouts.

Nic Wright doubled home a run in the fourth inning and the Spartans’ defense committed three errors in the top of the seventh that led to a second Cass run.

The Colonels managed only four hits themselves.

Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts, and Lovett (double) had one hit.

The loss dropped the host Spartans to a 9-6 record.

Cass (8-6) begins play in Region 7-5A next week with a three-game series against Dalton. The Catamounts are scheduled to host on Monday and Friday. Cass will host Game 2 of the series on Thursday. All three games are set for 5:55 p.m. starts.
